What is the best way to get that lovely pshhhhh sound? i know you can install a BOV, but im wondering if a new cone air filter would be enough for a fraction of the cost of the BOV. insight? ideas? suggestions?
thanks.

Well CAI will definitely make the turbo spool and bvp louder (my recommendation), but if you want the pshhhhh between shifts you gotta go with a bov. I wouldn't recommend 100% atmospheric but I've heard that 50/50 bovs work well. I just took off my hks ssq because I didn't know any better when I got it, it created all kinds of back chatter and caused the car to run a little rich, and it bucked between shifts (but did sound cute). Now that I've put an sti bov on the car runs a lot smoother.

Just my $.02.

up pipe/down pipe would give you good turbo spool sound, bov gives the whoosh. fircrest has good info in that post. I would recommend trying other things first before the CAI but you can do it in whichever order you would like :)

I get the pssshhhhh sound just from the Cobb SF short ram intake I have in my car, those are 100 dollars or so.

I may go BOV. I can't really do much until I get my car back. Anyone heard about the turbo XS Racing Hybrid WS08 blow off valve designed specifically for the 08 wrx? If so good or bad things?

Ugghhh. Please don't be one of "those guys." BOVs come at a serious price to performance, and 90% of Subaru owners who care about their car's tune will dismiss you instantly as a ricer....
Just don't do it. Promise you'll want to take it off within a few months at most.

it's not going to hurt your performance if you do it right. That being said, it's not going to help anything either. My advice: your money would be better spent elsewhere.

If you are going to get one, make sure it's not an atmospheric BOV.

Like I said, I think you'll be happier in the long run spending your money on something else, but it's your car: if you want the pssshhh sound, get a BOV and let people say what they want.

also, I don't know exactly how the 3rd gen WRX's are, but older ones have a restrictive silencer "elbow" in the fender, which when removed, gives you much more turbo and blow off sound. Might be a free and easy place to start.

Hmm. K I'll keep researching and see. Again, I can't even do anything until I get my car back. I'll see about that silencer and maybe an air filter cone. That seems to be the easiest and safest option overall.
Thanks, all

yeah the snorkus can be removed. That would give you a lot more noise...

yes but the physics exists to say that problems do indeed occur.

A tune would be good for it. I know someone who had problems when he went to atmosphere. I would try to do os so you dont have a outrageous tune bill. It's weird it seems some are fine others just act up. Maybe it because I have an early 02? Not sure I have seen alot of suby go atmosphere without any problems at all. It could be how you drive the car as well.

Minivan Mafia!
ok heres a shortcut for you man. if you look on the right side of your intercooler you will see your recirculating valve (where the bov bolts on to). you can see that there is a rubber hose connecting to it, with a clamp holding it on. if you take that off and plug it, you can get a nice "choof" or "pshhh" sound. because instead of the air recirculating, it just blows out. there's ur cheap-o bov man :) and i would save ur money and buy a tsudo 3" downpipe and a tune. although, that will cost you around $400 total, it's totally worth it :) or just a drop in HKS air filter. you will notice a huge difference with the downpipe, and a smaller difference with the air filter

EDIT: apparenty my ghetto bov is not a good idea. so i guess dont do it?
