boxer engines are non-interference engines so it will not blow up your rods and crank and all that shiz. It will run like turd and should be fixed as soon as possible, but you wont see catastrophic endings like you would on another type of engine luckily

no it is not. I drove on mine with like 6 teeth skipped from the previous tune. Turbo labs is who informed me of the engine information

the dohc cam motors are interference engines the sohc cam motors are not.

your timing belt can slip on a dohc motor as well. My motor was an ej257 crate racing engine that had slipped several teeth and was just fine

All DOHC and 1997-up SOHC EJ engines are interference engines, if the timing belt fails the engine will likely be destroyed or the valves & piston will be heavily damaged.

Valves open further in an interference engine and project further into the combustion chamber than in a ‘free-running’ engine. This allows outside air at atmospheric pressure flow faster into the combustion chamber through the larger valve opening. The engine can therefore inhale more air, be a little smaller, and still create as much power while reducing its. manufactured cost and also guaranteeing future repair business for its dealer. If a rubber timing belt breaks by not being replaced soon enough, some of the valves stuck in their open position will collide with the top of the pistons, thereby breaking or irreversibly damaging one or the other or both. To make matters worse, it is not possible to measure the wear on such a rubber belt so that it could be replaced when there is some indication of imminent failure. Failure in these belts is catastrophic, without warning. This will require a whole new engine be installed. Woe to the owner. Finally, the rubber belt may have to be replaced long before 60,000 miles solely due to its age. This is really playing a bad poker hand. Interference engines are like a time bomb waiting to explode unless replacing the timing belt at the recommended interval.

So to shorten this, if your timing belt break the engine still moves except the cams on the side that broke. So if any valves were open they are now bouncing off your piston most likely going to cause damage to valves, valve springs, pistons, rods. So basically your whole engine is screwed.

Two timing belts? since when?
Image
from what I understand you can skip plenty as long as the teeth are still moving your valve sprockets, if it snaps it is catastrophic failure, engine no good. if there is a crack in your timing belt get a new one soon! don't mess with blown engines, it's no fun.

just because your timing belt is skipping doesn't mean the timing is off enough to cause serious damage, once you lose to many teeth (after you lose more than three teeth you will get timing issues) in your belt it will skip an entire camshaft sprocket making the sprocket spin freely without adequate drive and that is when your timing goes out. that's when your valves stop and so does everything else. end of story.
ignore the arrows in the photo, this is a valve drive sprocket, when your timing belt breaks you still have tension on one or two sprockets therefore they are still being driven for a fraction of a second, just enough time to make your cams drive and valves hit 1-2 pistons without normal rebound. destroying your valves and pistons. good news is you can salvage everything but your cams, entire valve train, one maybe two pistons, crankshaft, rod bearings... all of the really expensive stuff that takes lot's of work.

so in short you need to replace your timing belt... now.
